Central Otago, located on the South Island of New Zealand, is one of the most stunningly beautiful wine regions in the world with its rugged mountains, crystal clear lakes and sweeping vistas. Located at 45˚ south, the region is the world’s southernmost wine region and New Zealand’s only “continental” region. The summers are hot and dry, and the winters crisp and snowy.
This unique climate provides the region with ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir with varied glacial soils and abundant sunshine which allows grapes to ripen with a high level of sugar while retaining a bracing level of acidity and giving the wines a purity reflective of the terroir and clear mountain air. The Pinot Noir and cool climate whites such as Riesling from Central Otago are gaining increasing recognition on the world wine stage. Writing in Decanter magazine, leading British wine writer and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson named Central Otago, alongside Napa Valley, Margaret River, Stellenbosch and Willamette, as one of the top five New World wine producing regions.
